The beautiful autumn colours for Johnston Gardens

Glorious autumn colours

ASPC has held a photography competition, now, for 4 years. We have always been very pleased with the response and highly impressed with the quality. This year’s invitation to enter, resulted in 300 entries, which we at ASPC find very encouraging.

As is our practice, we have chosen twelve winners. In addition to receiving a modest gift, each will be featured on our website home pages - one per month.

In this month’s winner, from Kate Milne, we have a scene familiar to generations of Aberdonians – Johnston Gardens in the Viewfield area of the City’s west end. The autumn colours are beautiful, complementing the sympathetic landscaping.

The Gardens were originally owned by the Johnston House estate and were gifted to the City in 1936 by The City of Aberdeen Land Association – the predecessor in this area of CALA. Today, the gardens are a popular resort for families, as they have a children’s play area as well as lots of interesting paths through the varied landscaping. There are ponds full of aquatic plants, and where visiting mallards can be seen, as well as the resident moorhens.

The gardens are, justifiably, popular with adults and children, from pram age, through toddlers and infants, and onwards.

Kate’s photograph has caught the scene at a particularly colourful time of year. The variety of plants and colours is very striking.
